My Grandfather was the Pirate of Nags Head

My sixth great grandfather was the pirate of Nags Head. His name was Willis Gallop, and he was infamous for standing on Jockey’s Ridge with a lantern in his hand to trick ships into thinking he was a lighthouse. He always wanted to have a hundred slaves on hand, but they either kept dying or running away. Until his body was exhumed and moved, he was buried standing up near the lighthouse on Ocracoke Island.
